Thanks Kelli! I am following the FIRST training principles and so far I feel like I am right where I want to be. Are you running Painters this year?

From Kelli on Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 22:43:28 from 71.219.97.106

I believe so...still kind of undecided. Last year I ran it and paced a friend so I really want to go an run it for myself and see how I can do. But I liked the course. Have you run it before?

The FIRST program is a good one, TOUGH!!!

Couldn't sleep last night, stressed about conference today. This nice early morning run did the trick, I feel great!! Ran from the police station, west 2nd, goucher, seventh day adventist church, columbus, fellows, hill, chemekata, church, old GH house and back to Bethel. I thought I was running at about 9 min pace but was barely under 10. Oh well it still felt great! Started to rain during my walk down.

3 Miles of quarter mile repeats on TM at Aqt Center. Speed was 5.7 and then 6 for all the rest and at 1% incline. Recoveries were at 5 and flat.

Mike, the County health director was in his usual place on the elliptical next to me. We chatted about the swine flu and their current efforts to get out the vaccine. We also complained about the felony assault that Florida Gator Mr Spikes committed against another player (eye gouging) and how he got off with a slap on the wrist by coach Urban Meyer (whom I used to respect).

Ran 2 miles in the evening at about 930pm with my teenage son. First time we have run together in about 5 years. He has suddenly become fitness minded and wanted to run with me. We took about 5 one minute walk breaks, but he did a great job for his first run in so long. It was a beautiful mild evening with a full moon so bright that we were casting shadows. What a great way to end the day.

Mack, I do the same thing while running. I was just telling my friend the other day that after studying a subject for a while, I'll go out for a long run to write my talk in my mind. Some times it takes me 8 miles, sometimes 20, but it is amazing to me how the combination of running and pondering invites revelation to me.

Running at 10:30 at night isn't so bad, but trying to fall to sleep afterwards is miserable.

From Mack on Wed, Nov 18, 2009 at 17:07:30 from 71.111.182.118

Rhett, It's nice to know I'm not the only one who prepares talks that way. I agree, it is a great way to get revelation.

Another thing I sometimes do is to pose a good question to myself right before my run and then spend the entire run pondering it. For example on my sons first day of middle school I spent my early morning run pondering this question "what are the 3 most important things a boy needs in a dad during his years in middle school?" At first not much comes but as a run progresses and I add a little prayer it's amazing to see the ideas that can flow into my mind. Then it is fun to go home and write them in my journal.

There are of course an unlimited number of questions one could ask themselves. This is just one that was particularly meaningful to me.

From Rhett on Thu, Nov 19, 2009 at 10:43:59 from 74.42.168.210

That's a great idea, I may have to borrow that from you.

From Huans32 on Thu, Nov 19, 2009 at 10:50:40 from 138.64.2.76

Great job on the run and I am sure your talk will be great. I like to deal with my stresses on my run too. And leave them on the run. It does seem alot easier to think about things. Just as long as I am not working speed or tempo. Where my focus is all on paces. You need to post a pic of yourself so we will recognize you at Painters in Jan.:)

My wife dropped me off 5 miles from the church out towards Yam. Ran into town over the 4 steep hills. I power walked about half of each hill. Passed the Bishop who was running the other direction. There were a ton of runners out around town today, but my country run was pretty quiet and peaceful. It rained fairly hard for the last mile or two and that felt very refreshing.

I set out this morning to do a ten mile run. It was cold and the roads were icy and I didn't feel very motivated so I decided to do it on the treadmill. I put in the 1995 Orange Bowl ( A great game where Nebraska beats Miami in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to win the national championship). The game was so good that I just kept running and running. Ended up doing 13.1 miles. I tacked on the 0.1 just to make it an official half marathon.

I have lately been doing a lot of TM running while watching football. It has been a lot of fun, but I think I need to get some of these long runs in on the road so I will be obeying the training principle of specificity. I need to be prepared for Painters next month.

So how long did your TM 1/2 marathon take? Are you a Nebraska fan? That was a heck of a defensive performance they put on Sat. night. If Suh wasn't so fast, McCoy would have held on to that ball a second longer and the Corn Huskers would have won.

From Mack on Mon, Dec 07, 2009 at 18:09:24 from 71.111.182.118

Rhett, It took 2:10. My goal is to go sub 2 at Painters.

I love the Cornhuskers. I went to dental school in Omaha from 1993-1997. They won 2 national championships during that time. I wasn't able to watch the Texas game but heard it was very exciting. I think they are finally making there way back up to where they were in the glory years of the mid 90's. Do you watch a lot of college football?

How long to you sneak away from the office for during lunch? I always pack a bag with my gym stuff in it, just in case I have a big opening in my schedule, but I only seem to get away a couple times per month if I'm lucky.

From Mack on Wed, Dec 09, 2009 at 17:16:47 from 71.111.182.118

I take lunch from noon to one thirty. I usually get the whole hour and a half as long as my last patient of the morning doesn't run over. My front office staff knows how important my run it is to me so they are careful to not schedule anything that could go past noon. With an hour and a half I have time to drive to the gym, change, run 3 miles, go to subway and grab a sandwhich, stop at the park on the way back to the office to eat my sandwich while sitting in my truck and then make it back to the office by 130pm. It probably sounds kind of hectic but it works just fine.

I do love the desert though. The only thing that ever spoils the day is wind.

Xtraining is great. Cll rower is a rowing machine I take it?? Put up a pic of yourself too on your blog so we can recognize you at Painters.

From Mack on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 18:55:47 from 71.111.182.118

Yeah, its a rowing machine. http://www.concept2.com/us/default.asp

If you get the chance you ought to give it a try. I love the thing.

You're right I really do need to get a picture up here and over on forum flyers. I know it sounds lame but I don't have any digital pictures of myself. It's on my to do list though.

Strangely, my calves are still slightly sore from Saturday's hilly run so I opted for more cross training today.

45 Min total. 15 on bike, 15 on rower and 15 on elliptical. No rest in between. Then some moderate weights: arms, chest, abs.

This was a great work out and left me feeling exhilirated. A much needed feeling after all of the crud I ate yesterday. The sequence of the bike first then the rower felt much better than the other way around. Something about being warmed up already that made the rower feel much better than usual.

Ran from the top of B Creek down past the church, Grandhaven, the steel mill, the Egans, and ended on 13th street just over Lafayette by the train tracks. The weather was blue sky and very chilly with a fair bit of wind. Mercifully the wind was only in my face for about a quarter of a mile.

I am ashamed to admit it has taken me this long to become a Garmin owner, but it's true. Today was the first time I have ever run with a Garmin. My wife bought me a 205 for Christmas. I am amazed at how light and comfortable it is. When I have seen others wearing them I have assumed they were heavy to lug around.

My average pace on this run was 9:31 which is smokin' for me. When I run Painters next month I will be in the best shape of my life. I know I have a long way to go to Boston, but I'm heading in the right direction and I WILL get there. Life is very good!

Good run, I am sure you will get there, your pace today was fast in terms of your posted PRs.

Nice job!!! Garmin's can be your best friend or your worst enemy. When I wear mine during races, I'm constantly looking at it and it drives me crazy. lol

I never run (outside that is) without my Garmin. You will love it.

14 miles down, looks like you are going to be very ready for Painter's.
