Not sure why I disappeared from the blog for several weeks. I got pretty busy and than just kind of got out of the rhythm of blogging. But I am back! Thanks Rhett, DoG and Flat for nudging me back here.

Maybe I should have changed it to DoG. I considered it, but thought it would be a little pretentious.

Please, feel free to call me DoG. I've always wanted a nickname and I like it.

Ran on the TM at the aquatic center. Within the first minute I knew it was going to be a pleasant run and I wasn't disappointed. I felt great for the entire run and only have a little soreness today (Sunday).

If I stay consistent I might just be able to get myself ready for a respectable showing at the Canyonlands half in March.

Canyonlands Half is in Moab on March 19. It's beautiful red rock country. It's a lot like St George in terms of location and race organization. Great race.

I had planned to ride the stationary bike right after work but the weight room was so full of people that I had to run on the TM instead as that was the only thing open. I was still a little sore from saturday so I ran a gentle slow 3 miles. Visited with Jeanna and Dick who were on either side of me.

This morning I was very irritated at my teenage son over some issues I won't get in to here. So I cranked up the resistance on the bike and pounded out a hard 20 minutes and then lifted weights. It didn't make the problem go away but it sure makes me feel better.

Nice job.

Is that the same movie that has Jeff Bridges? Probably not. A few months ago I was flipping though channels and stumbled upon a movie about body building that had Arnold and Jeff Bridges. It was a hoot.

I just looked it up. The movie I saw was "Stay Hungry" with Arnold Schwarzennegger, Jeff Bridges, Sally Field, Robert Englund and also written by the same guy that wrote "Pumping Iron."

Go figure. lol

From Mack on Mon, Feb 14, 2011 at 17:28:25 from 71.111.188.189

Dale, I'll have to check into that "stay hungry."

Pumping Iron was only kind of so, so. My son had left it in the DVD player so I thought I'd give it a whirl. It did help the miles go by.

Rhett, Yeah the 24 hour thing sounds pretty good to me too. Also, just a change and a new place with new/different equipment might be kind of fun too. If you don't mind me asking, how much do you pay monthly at your gym?

From Rhett on Wed, Mar 02, 2011 at 15:10:14 from 184.10.153.22

Mack, I don't mind, but the honest truth is, I don't know. My wife takes care of all that. I do know we get a discount by paying yearly and for both being members. I want to say we pay around $500 a year for the two of us.

From DaleG on Thu, Mar 03, 2011 at 14:17:14 from 67.2.10.194

Mack, just up the street from me is a little gym in a strip mall that has 24 hour access and it's only $20 per month. Do they have anything like that in your area? It's not a very big gym, but it's never crowded when I drive by at night. I thought about joining so I could go after I get off work at 2 am, but I'd rather sleep.

Mack, that's a real bummer not getting into St. George.

I plan on doing the Runner Series every year until I'm in the ten year club. I know if I enter the lottery that I will never get picked.

Although, last year I didn't finish the runner series and I also didn't make the lottery, but somehow, around August, they cashed my check. I called them and they said I made it in. I had them send me an email saying that I got in. Very strange.

From Mack on Mon, May 09, 2011 at 22:39:47 from 50.39.193.169

Wow, that's weird with the check thing.

I guess i ought to consider the runner series.

From DaleG on Mon, May 09, 2011 at 22:52:04 from 173.147.83.59

I really like doing the runner series. But I hate having to pay for a hotel room to do the races. We had been staying with relatives but they are moving away. My new favorite race in the series is the snow canyon half. I also like the spectrum 10k, but I have a hard time paying a lot in expenses to run a 10k.

From Mack on Tue, May 10, 2011 at 19:13:05 from 50.39.193.169

Dale, I just got done checking out the Snow Canyon Half web site. Looks like a pretty nice run. I'm tempted to come give it a try if I can convince my wife that the travel costs are worth it.

Flat and Rhett, Thanks for the condolences. I'm actually 4 out of 5 when it comes to getting into races with a lottery. So I can't complain! I'll find a good alternative. Maybe Top of Utah.

From DaleG on Tue, May 10, 2011 at 19:37:51 from 173.147.83.59

Mack, snow canyon half was awesome!!! Beautiful scenery, too. I could have PR'd if I would have trained and had more time to train. seems like I was dealing with an injury sometime last year before the St George marathon, but I can't remember what it was. Left from my house and tried to go up orchard way. First steep hill was brutal and I had to push my bike part of the way. The next mile was fine until I hit more steep hills. They never look that steep when you drive them. I finally turned around and sailed back home. Kept going past Mrs Howard's house up the dirt road to make it an even 40.

GREAT workout. I'm still feeling the glow of it several hours later as I type this. I'm going to try running again on Saturday if everything feels good.

I hope the new gym works out for you. Is it close by work so you can get in your lunch time workouts?

From Mack on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 18:15:42 from 50.39.193.169

Yeah, it's pretty close to my office. Problem is I shortened my lunch time from 90 minutes to 60 minutes for 2011. That helps us get in an extra patient every day. Makes it harder to squeeze a workout in though. I think in 2012 I'll probably go back to 90 minutes.

How about you? Are you doing any lunch time running or still mostly morning?

From Rhett on Tue, May 24, 2011 at 19:03:53 from 74.32.222.239

Most of the time it is just in the morning for me. It's the rare day I have more than 20 minutes for lunch. Seems like I go through little stretches where I have more time at lunch. Lately I haven't though.

From DaleG on Fri, May 27, 2011 at 14:12:50 from 76.27.13.205

two miles is better than nothing at all. I hope that gym works out. I once told you about this little gym near me that is open 24 hours. You need to swipe your gym card to get in and I just found out that people are always having problems getting in. When they try to contact the owner, she tells them she can't come let them in because she's too busy. I guess I won't be joining that gym.

Just checking in on you. It's been a while. How the weather?

From Mack on Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 18:32:44 from 50.39.193.169

Hey Dale, Thanks for checking in. My running has gotten VERY inconsistent and my weight is creeping up. I don't know if I can even run two miles. Pathetic I know but it is what it is.

But...Starting today I am throwing off the yoke of bondage that has held me down. I signed up to run the Louisville Half in November with a friend who lives back there. My training is going to be CONSISTENT and I am going to become fast, fit and strong. I'm going to get back to blogging here too.

Thanks again for checking in on me. Your occasional checks on me have kept the tiny flicker of motivation alive over the last few months.

From DaleG on Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 21:52:04 from 152.216.11.5

Mack, I'm glad I could help keep you motivated, even just a little. I've been in the same boat, but mostly from injuries. I have also been struggling with motivation and my weight creeped up to 197 a month or so ago. I'm down to 186 and I hope to be down to 175 in time for the St. George Marathon. I really need to get my butt in gear once we get back from Disneyland on Aug 13th.

Today mine were clean but the heavy set lady on the bike next to me smelled really bad. To make it worse she kept fanning herself with a piece of paper which spread the smell even more. Nice lady I'm sure but it was disgusting. Guarantee you tomorrow my workout will be outside.

My legs were still a little sore this morning from my last run so I didn't dare risk an injury by going out for another run. Instead I went to the gym and did 40 min of cross training.

Intervals on the bike for 25 minutes and then intervals on the elliptical for 15.

I love that elliptical! It is the kind where you can vary your stride all the way from a stair stepping motion up to a full out sprint all while it is in motion. It cranks my heart rate up and is very kind on my legs. I just hope the fitness it develops will transfer to my runs.

Evening run. Same route and time as last week, just an extra mile tacked on the end. Had a barking dog dart out of a driveway right before the gillas' house. I had my pepper spray and was ready to light him up, but when I turned to face him he put his tail down and ran back home. Coward. I don't like those dog encounters, but the extra epinephrine and cortisol my adrenal glands dumped into my blood stream did make the next mile or so a little easier.

This was a very difficult run and I'm not sure why. My breathing felt labored and my legs heavy the entire run. I guess some runs just feel this way. All I can do to fight back is get better quality workouts during the week, plenty of rest and better nutrition. Losing about ten pounds would make a huge difference too.

Nice soothing, relaxing 5 miler. Ran the church, chamber, wallace, bike path route in the dark at about 8pm.

I have been reading George Sheehan lately. Tonight I followed one of his recommendations regarding perceived effort. He said to have a very relaxing run, try running at about an effort of 6 on a scale of 1-10. I did and found that I had to constantly slow myself down. I think I usually try to push an 8.5 or 9 which is kind of stressful if done every workout. This is probably all pretty basic stuff for most people, but it is a new concept for me. Pretty cool!

Evening 10 Miler. Felt a little weak and ill and stressed and run down so I decided to do the Jeff Galloway run/walk thing. 3 min run/2min walk alternated for the whole 10 miles. I was stunned to see that it only added 11 min on to my total time as compared to my last 10 miler that I ran all the way through. Not sure how the math on that could work, but it did.

Legs still a little sore form Saturday so I did 30 min stationary bike at the gym.

It just dawned on me today that instead of coping with a 30 min boring ride by watching ESPN I could try something different. I decided to do a tempo ride. Did it just like you would a run. It was awesome! A much better workout and not too boring. Not sure if biker people do tempo rides or if this is my own creation but it was good.

Yep, I've read that biker people do tempo rides. That's usually how I ride on the stationary bike too. Great job making your workout count. I think you were close to speaking blasphemy when you used boring and ESPN in the same sentence. Be careful with that. :)

Actually things have been going great. Just got away form the blogging a bit. I ran the Louisville Half on Saturday. I'll get a report up soon.

It was funny DoG because I had just staggered out of bed early in the morning on Saturday and was checking my email on my phone before leaving the hotel to go to the race. There was your message asking me how everything is going. Great timing! Just mad me feel like it was going to be a good day. And it was!

Hey Mack, I'm glad I helped your day get off to a good start. that's awesome. I look forward to reading your race report.

Race: Louisville Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 02:20:00

Flew out to Louisville to run with my good friend who is the warden of a federal prison just outside of Somerset. It was great fun to see him and his wife again. We stayed in a hotel in Louisville to avoid what would have been a three hour drive from his house. I didn't sleep much, probably because of the time change (3 hours) and just being in a hotel room. Finally fell asleep at about 130 am. The alarm went off at 6 am and I staggered out of bed and started to dress. As I was getting ready I checked my email on my phone and Dale had posted a note to me here on the board. I took it as a good omen, as I haven't been on the blog for a few weeks. Thanks Dale!

The race started in front of the KFC Yum Center (no kidding, that's what it is called). Before the gun went off, they did two things that I thought were very cool: they played the star spangled banner and had an opening prayer...I'm not kidding, they had someone give a prayer over the loud speakers while two thousand runners bowed their heads, listened and said amen. At that point I knew for sure I wasn't in Oregon anymore!

My race was pretty uneventful. As you can tell by my time, I wan't very well prepared. I took a number of walking breaks and just enjoyed the beautiful scenery as we wound through parks and the inner city of Louisville.

All and all the whole thing was a lot of fun. I  would love to go back next year and be prepared to run fast.

Mack, I just read about your half marathon last weekend. Did they pass out free chicken at the start in front of the KFC Yum Center? That is an awesome name.

Ran out and back on BCreek from my house. Haven't ran in nearly two weeks as I have had a very bad cold/bronchitis. Glad I finally got rid of it. Felt great to get back in action, but I'm always amazed by how much fitness is lost with just 2 weeks off.

Went to my old gym today as our membership still hasn't expired yet. Amazing how fast things change. They have gotten rid of my favorite stationary bike! I tried a new recombinant one and it was actually pretty cool. It had a lot of electronic gadgets on it and I got a good, hard 30 minute workout. I guess sometimes change is good.

Where are you Mack?

It's a new year and time for everyone to start running and posting about it....

From Mack on Tue, Jan 17, 2012 at 18:23:11 from 50.39.193.169

Thanks for the shout out Fly.

We said it different in my neighborhood. It was: Olly, Olly oxen, in come free, if you don't come now you're it. The threat of being "it" worked every time.

I have had a rough past few weeks. I somehow hurt my back. Some days I can hardly walk. It's so bad that some mornings I can't hardly get out of bed and have to crawl in excruciating pain to the bathroom. Nasty, nasty pain. Running has been completely out of the question.

It's been a little better the past two days. In fact, yesterday it was good enough that I was able to walk 2 miles on the TM with only a little discomfort.

I have been a little embarrassed to come on the board and tell everyone about it and sound like a whiner.

I know it will get better and I'll be back on the run before long.

I still check in from time to time to see what everybody else is up to. Thanks for checking on me.

Sorry Rhett and Dale for not responding to your posts...I just wasn't feeling up to it. Hope you are all doing well!!

From DaleG on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 11:46:55 from 71.199.57.238

Hey Mack, how's the back feeling? I'm hoping it's getting better each day.

From Mack on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 13:55:02 from 50.39.204.232

Hi DoG,

Actually it is doing really well. I would say it is about 99% healed. Yesterday I went out for my first run in several weeks. I ran two telephone poles and then walked one. Ran two and walked one etc for 2 miles. It felt great at the time. Unfortunately later that day I could feel the pain in my back. VERY frustrating.

So, I am sad to say, I have become a walker for the time being. I've been walking from my work to our church in the evenings and then back to my work to get my truck after my meetings. About 2 miles each way. Feels pretty good, but no where near as good as a run. But my back tolerates it well.

I feel as a walker I'm not worthy to come on here and post. :) So I have been awol from the blog.

My plan is to keep gradually introducing running to my sore back until I can eventually be back to my old self. I think it may be a slow process. I'm going to be patient with it. My goal is to be ready to run a half in June.

Thanks for checking in on me!

From Rhett on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 14:44:17 from 170.215.58.122

Being patient is the hardest part Mack, but it sounds like you have a good plan.

From fly on the Wall on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 15:21:48 from 204.113.19.47

"I feel as a walker I'm not worthy to come on here and post."

You are worthy. The world 50k racewalking record hasn't been bested in almost 4 years. That's ripe fruit for your picking Mack!

From Mack on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 15:28:14 from 50.39.204.232

Thanks Fly :)

I would love to chase that record, but would feel like a bit of a fool doing the whole arm swing/wobbly leg gait thing. I already feel kind of sheepish about having to walk normally while sleek, fit runners blow past me. Having them fly by while I'm walking that way?? I just couldn't do it. :)

From fly on the Wall on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 15:40:20 from 204.113.19.47

It is the runners who should worry about looking foolish. At record pace you'll be flying past all but a few of them!

From DaleG on Wed, Feb 08, 2012 at 18:40:16 from 152.216.7.5

I remember watching the Olympic racewalking 50k at the last summer games and I think the winner finished around 3:30. I was very impressed.
