My back is healed! I think...

Today I walked on the treadmill for 30 min with alternating  4 min walk and then 1 min run throughout. A total of 6 min of running!!!! I did my back stretches before and after and NO BACK PAIN!!!!!

I am so excited. I had to start somewhere and I can only go up from here. I'm a long way away from a sub 2 half marathon, but I'm moving in the right direction.

Mack, I'm so glad you are able to run (AND BLOG)again and that your back pain is gone. Build slowly so you don't have any set backs.

From Mack on Fri, Mar 09, 2012 at 09:57:46 from 50.39.204.232

Thanks Rhett. That's going to be the hardest thing...coming back slowly. I have really missed the endorphins. I'll have to remember to get them primarily through cross training while I ease into the running.

Lunch time workout. My son had to borrow my truck so I had no way to get to the gym during my lunch hour. Instead, I changed in the bathroom and headed out into the subdivision behind my office. I was shocked to find a beautiful trail that starts just behind my office and winds its way through a quiet neighborhood and some wooded areas. It was beautiful warm sunny weather and a few people were out walking. I had no idea after all of these years of being here that this trail existed! I am going to ditch the gym and start taking my lunch runs on it.

30 min Cardio (10 bike/10 elliptical/10 bike). Lifted weights and yoga stretches for my back.

My teenage daughter had a swim meet this morning in a city about 30 miles from our house. I dropped her off at the pool for her warm up time and then found the closest Anytime Fitness and did the above workout. Still made it back in time to watch all of her swimming races.

My back feels fine. My left hamstring is mildly tender.

30 min of alternating run/walk 2:3 in the pouring rain with about a 20mph head wind on the way out that felt great when I turned around and had the tail wind all the way home. Got home cold and wet but with that good feeling of satisfaction of knowing I got it done.

Lifted weights at Anytime for about 30 min. Just random lifts with very light weights and one set each. Almost felt more like a stretching session than lifting. Felt good.

My daughter has a nice 10 mile route that she has been doing on Saturday evenings for the past few months. Due to issues with my back and some laziness in training I have had to ride along with her on my bike until last night. For the first time in a long time I ran with her and it was great! I only went 3 miles and then she continued on for her ten. I have a ways to go before I'm back up to ten, but it sure felt good to be able to do this three with her.

From flatlander on Mon, Apr 30, 2012 at 15:42:19 from 198.207.244.102

I'm not an expert, but I think it is excessive training that can wear down young kids (and old men), not the racing part of it so much. I say let her run it and see how she does.

It's a good feeling to know I am back in action after a few months of being bogged down with some personal/family challenges. Life is so sweet and enjoyable when I'm running regularly. I definitely felt that good old pleasant glow as I stepped off the TM after putting in a simple little 2 miler.

I love the new mantra Mack. And good job on finishing up the run without walking.

Thanks Rhett. You are definitely one who is consistent and that inspires me.

60 min cardio (combination Bike and elliptical) at gym.

Yesterday I ordered "Power 90" which is kind of like a lighter version of P90X (made by the same people). When it arrives I'm going to do it for the full 90 days like Rhett did his P90X. I need the break in routine as running has become stale for me.

I'm thinking that after 90 days of that I will be in much better shape and itching to get back into my regular running mode.

30 Min of good hard cardio intervals (bike and elliptical). Weights: upright rows, dips, tricep push downs, curls, bench press and crunches. I did one set of 15 for each lift in a circuit with enough weight to get about 90% to failure). For the crunches I did Joe Weiders aerobic 6 (modified down to 3 for my not yet fit abs).

I was furious this morning with one of my employees and it felt incredibly good to go to the gym at lunch and blow it all off and replace it with endorphins.

Still waiting for my power 90 to come in the mail...

BTW...why no profile picture?

From Mack on Fri, Nov 30, 2012 at 15:08:27 from 50.39.133.3

Well actually just the aerobic part was 30 minutes. The weights took about another 20. Have to squeeze it all in to my lunch hour.

No real reason to be picture-less. Just have never got around to putting one up.

Power 90 sounds cool Mac. Keep posting your workouts. I found it really motivated me knowing I had to post all 90 days of P90X. You are going to totally transform your body if you stick with it. Good luck.

From Mack on Sat, Dec 01, 2012 at 21:08:44 from 174.255.162.226

Thanks Rhett. I'm 100% committed to go the whole 90 days. Im even following the eating plan. My teenage son is doing it with me.

You are the one that inspired me to do it. It's a lighter version of P90X made by the same guy, Tony Horton. Good stuff!!

Today was cardio and abs. I wasn't able to keep up with the guys on the video. Too intense. So I just did everything at a little lower intensity. Still got my heart rate sky high and a ton of sweat. Felt really, really good afterwards.

P90. Day 4 of 90

Today was strength and sculpting. Felt good. The eating part of this program has been a real change for me. I'm really starting to get just how important good eating is to improving fitness. In the past I have often labored under the false notion that I could work out enough to cover up bad eating habits. Not so. At least not for me.

One real eye opener is the simple concept of not eating for 3 hours before going to bed. I sleep much more soundly and wake up in the mood to eat a healthy breakfast when I follow this one simple rule. The plan has a bunch of similar concepts, but this one has been particularly helpful.

I was still a little sore from the last workout so I dialed the intensity down just a little bit. Also have been STARVING on the eating plan so I'm going to start adding a piece of fruit to the breakfast and raw vegetables to the dinners. I have dropped 7 pounds so far. I know that my weight can't continue to fall at that pace, but it is pretty cool to see it coming off.

P90. Day 8 of 90.

This morning I woke up and for the first time since I started this, I didn't feel like turning on the DVD player. I knew it would happen, I just didn't know when. The newness always eventually wears off and you are left to see just how committed you really are. My way of dealing with it was to just get out of bed and turn on the DVD without even thinking about it. The decision has already been made to go the whole 90 days whether I feel like it or not. At the end of the workout I felt good. From the workout itself and from knowing I got it done.

Hey Flat, It's actually probably not as big a deal as I'm making it out to be. But it has been good. My goal is to go the whole 90 days and then be light enough and fit enough and mentally refreshed enough to jump back into my running.

I'm having a little minor pain in my left knee and left bicep. Not sure what caused either of them. My knee feels fine when I do the lunges and squats and my bicep feels fine during the curls. Just a little tender during the day. No big deal I'm sure. I'll just keep a close watch on it.
